The Kingdom of Bhutan

In October and November I had the extraordinary opportunity to visit Bhutan just after it had opened following more than 2 ½ years of some of the severest lockdown restrictions.

My partner Dominic studies sustainability from the standpoint of business and government policy at London Business School. I have been exploring my passion for a sustainable world through art, with my work being celebrated by the Royal Academy in this year’s Summer Exhibition.

Bhutan is at the forefront of sustainability: the last King said that gross national happiness must take priority far ahead of material wealth.

What makes people happy?

We met Khenpo, a senior Buddhist monk, until recently director of the Bhutanese National Art Museum, and had a rich discussion with him about mindfulness, compassion and how this could not be just about individuals but had to relate to the whole environment.

Those Buddhist values are everywhere in Bhutan: it is an undisturbed Buddhist culture going back more than a thousand years.

You see Buddhist images and mantras appearing on rocks and trees; the whole country is sacred the monastic system provides social care for many boys from poor backgrounds who become monks.

Here are child monks making cakes carvings as ritual offerings but we didn’t see any opportunities for poor female children of this kind. There are few nuns in Bhutan. As in many traditional societies, we saw women doing the heavy work.

6th October 2022, Travellers Club, London

My good friend, Richard Hilliard put together a wonderful evening of #entertainment but also bringing #awareness to an important topic on Thursday 6th October 2022, in the traditional British style at the Travellers Club, London.

Lady Milford Haven shared her story behind her charity for helping young men and teenage girls in uncertain situations James's Place.

Richard co-produced the evening with the bespoke theatre Spectrum Drama.

One could recognise familiar faces of the actors reading from Richard’s book ‘Plenty of Grapes’.

Richard asked me to photograph the evening which was an unique opportunity to meet, talk and photograph some of the very special guests across the spectrum: members of the Royal Family namely, Clare Husted Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven and George Mountbatten, 4th Marquess of Milford Haven, arts, sports, entertainment, business, philosophy and other professionals.

Wowed to be with such great artists and Royal Academicians in this year’s summer show! #RASummer – all about climate change.

Many thanks to everyone who has visited this year’s 254th Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts.

I am thrilled that my image was sold 🔴 and it will continue visually telling my story of HOPE ♻️ and also this sale supports the Royal Academy Schools which makes me so happy.

Humbled to be chosen as one of the five RA summer show exhibitors to be featured in the Royal Academy celebratory video, for this year’s summer exhibition which is all about climate change.

I had the opportunity to share my work with the world online as I was featured in this year’s official summer exhibition video and in person sharing my story behind the chosen photograph while taking my guests (from the leading figures in the contemporary art and architecture, photography, Harvard Business School professor and his wife, top mindfulness guru, friends and family as well as all the art lovers, supporters to art-buyers) to see the whole exhibition in the beautiful galleries of the RA in the heart of London.

The Summer Exhibition is back! Still the world’s largest open-call exhibition, the 2022 show is coordinated by Royal Academician Alison Wilding. The exhibition brings together over 1,200 works made by everyone from emerging to internationally renowned artists, all exploring this year’s timely theme of ‘Climate’.
